Ed Crane is the founder and president of the Cato Institute.
Under his leadership, Cato has grown to become one of the nation’s most prominent public policy research organizations. Crane has been a pioneer in framing the political debate as one, not between liberal and conservative, but rather between civil society (the voluntary sector) and political society (government power).
Crane was at the forefront of promoting personal accounts for Social Security reform and was one of the first national leaders of the term limits movement. He is the coeditor of several books, publisher of Regulation magazine, and is a member of the Mont Pelerin Society.
He is a chartered financial analyst and former vice president at Alliance Capital Management Corp. Crane’s writing has been published in the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, the New York Times and Forbes. He has been interviewed on National Public Radio’s Morning Edition and Talk of the Nation, C-SPAN’s Washington Journal, Fox News Channel, MSNBC, and other national media. Crane holds a B.S. from the University of California, Berkeley and an MBA from the University of Southern California.
“I have known Ed Crane for thirty years, and every time I hear or read him, I learn something new and important.” – John McClaughry (Vice President, EAI)

“Freedom and Choice” is the theme of the fourth annual Milton Friedman Day observance to be held Friday, July 30, from 5-7pm at the Sheraton Burlington Conference Center.
The speaker is Bill Sayre of Bristol, a former student of Nobel Prize winning economist Milton Friedman at the University of Chicago. Sayre, an economist and businessman, is the former chair of Associated Industries of Vermont and a regular commentator on True North Radio.
The event, part of the Sheraton Economic Series, honors what would be the 98th birthday of Prof. Friedman, a one time resident of Ely, Vermont. It is hosted by the Sheraton Burlington, sponsored by the Ethan Allen Institute, and cosponsored by the Lake Champlain Regional Chamber of Commerce, Vermont Economy Newsletter, Vermont Business Magazine, and Vermont Tiger.
“In an era when we seem to be afflicted with ever more government mandating ever more choices for citizens, it’s useful – and indeed inspirational – to review the life and thought of Milton Friedman, a true apostle of liberty”, said EAI vice president John McClaughry.
The Sheraton Economic Series is open to the public and no admission charge or reservation is required,

Five knowledgeable Vermonters will headline
Rx for Healthcare Reform
a program at the
Williston Central School Auditorium on
Tuesday, November 17th from 6:30-8:30pm.
The general public is invited.
At a time when national and state health care reform efforts have become the top item on the domestic policy agenda, the speakers will zero in on what these plans mean for our liberty, the quality of our health care, and the enormous costs.
The keynote speaker will be John McClaughry of the Ethan Allen Institute. He was a state senator at the time of Gov. Deans reforms in the 1990s, and before that a senior policy advisor in the Reagan White House. McClaughry will explain how the proposed national ?reforms? will steadily convert the health care sector of the economy into a wholly owned subsidiary of the federal government.
Other speakers will include EAI Director, William Sayre, a past board member of Porter Medical Center and a member of the Governor’s Council of Economic Advisors, Rutland attorney, Steven James Howard, interim coordinator for the Vermont Campaign for Liberty, Dr. Robert S. Emmons, Burlington psychiatrist and adjunct Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Vermont, and Jane Combs RN, of the Burlington Health and Rehabilitation Center. The moderator is Paul Beaudry of True North Radio.
This forum will include overviews of the various Federal and State healthcare reform bills, their economic impact, their constitutionality and legal implications, insurance reforms, ethical considerations, the impact of government regulations on health care providers, and preserving the quality of medical care and the doctor-patient relationship.
Speakers will provide valuable information followed by an hour long question/answer period. Citizens who attend this forum will leave with a better understanding of how proposed healthcare reforms will affect their lives.
The forum is cosponsored by the Ethan Allen Institute and Vermonters for Choice in Health Care. VCHC is a coalition of Vermont organizations created to educate the public on the key issues involved in health care policy. (vermonters4choiceinhealthcare@gmail.com)
